LeadAR - How to Apply
How Applicants Are Selected

Before the interviews are conducted, each selection committee member receives a copy of each application packet. The packet includes the pre-application, full application, supporting application by spouse, employer commitment form, and four recommendations from friends or business associates. They also receive a score sheet. They are asked to score the applicants based on the application materials received before the interview. This scoring accounts for 75 % of the total points. The interview scoring is done immediately after each interview and accounts for 25% of the total points.

After all applicants are interviewed in a district, the committee considers the applicants ranked by points and then considers the diversity of those being selected in that district based on applicants’ home county, occupation, ethnicity, potential for growth, potential to add value to the class, and total number of LeadAR alumni from the applicants’ county. They give special consideration to applicants from counties with no current alumni or low numbers of alumni and to farmers (since fewer farmers have been applying in recent years). They defer selecting any Extension faculty applicants until the final meeting of the Advisory Council Selection Committee to give preference to clientele. No more than two Extension faculty members can be selected for each class.

Certain applicants not immediately selected by the district committee are designated as alternates, in case a selected applicant chooses not to participate. The class limit is 25–30. The committee can choose less if they desire. Class size is based on the quality and number of applicants.

The Advisory Council Selection Committee meets in late November or early December to interview applicants who could not make the district interview dates. They select the remainder of the class from these last interviews and the designated alternates to ensure diversity in the class. The goal of the selection committee is to choose a diverse class based on geography, culture, age, sex, occupation, and leadership experience.

After the entire Advisory Council approves the proposed class, the director calls those selected to confirm their desire to participate. Each of those selected is expected to confirm in writing or by email their commitment to participate in all aspects of the LeadAR program. If they choose not to participate for any reason, the director calls the alternates in the order prioritized by the selection committee to fill the vacancy.
