Economic Development
Take Charge Program

The Take Charge Program helps communities identify and implement appropriate economic development strategies.

Change in rural America presents many challenges to rural decision makers.  With change come opportunities for community betterment.  Rural America can take charge of its future through the Take Charge Program.

Take Charge consists of a series of three workshops - each lasting about three hours.

First Workshop - Where are we now?

  • Examine current trends and characteristics of a community.

  • Understand the basics of economic development.

  • Assess opportunities for economic growth through existing community resources.

Second Workshop - Where do we want to be?

  • Examine 13 strategies or economic development by analyzing community capacity and risks/benefits.

  • Develop a vision for the future by focusing on projects that implement the most realistic economic development strategies.

Third Workshop - How do we get there?

  • Organize a community for economic development.

  • Prepare for action through leadership development and engagement of the total community.

  • Prioritize short- and long-term actions.

  • Develop a plan of action.

  • Identify and mobilize resources.

  • Evaluate actions and manage the program over time.
